2.1) Competitors Gi’s will be checked prior to the competition. BJJ Roots officials have the right to ask a competitor to change his/her Gi if it is deemed unsuitable for competition. Gi standards follow IBJJF standards; only white, black, or royal blue colors are permitted for adults and juveniles (kids additionally to white, blue and black are allowed to wear pink, grey and purple Gi color) . A Gi is deemed unsuitable if it has holes and tears, is wet or dirty with unpleasant odors, is too long/short, or has too many patches which limit the opponent’s ability to grip.
2.2) Male competitors (adults, juvenile and kids) are not allowed to wear anything such as a rash guard or t-shirt underneath the Gi; female competitors must wear a rashguard or a very tight shirt underneath the Gi. However, female competitors are not allowed to wear t-shirts underneath the Gi.
2.3) Kids Gi should be tailored using cotton or cotton-like fabric only (pearl weave or ripstop fabrics are accepted for full kids gi (Jacket and Pants)), (Taekwondo or Karate Gis are not allowed). The fabric should not be so thick or hard to impede an opponent from gripping it.
For juvenile, adult, master, and senior divisions, a Gi fashioned from woven fabric is mandatory and ripstop fabric is not allowed on the jacket but it's accepted on the pants.
2.4) No-Gi Rash guards: Following IBJJF standards, both genders must wear a shirt of elastic material (skin tight called rash guard) long enough to cover the torso all the way to the waistband of the shorts, colored black, white, or black and white, and with at least 50% of the rank color(belt) to which the athlete belongs. Rash guards with 100% the color of the athlete’s rank (belt) are also permitted. However, regular T-Shirts are not allowed.
